How much does septic tank pumping cost?
Typical market ranges for this region. Every one of these is a band, and a real quote depends on the tank, the access and the haul.
| Job | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tank up to 1,000 gallons | $150 to $300 | the common residential job |
| Tank of 1,250 gallons | top of that band | roughly a quarter more volume |
| Tank of 1,500 gallons | above that band, quoted on volume | half again the volume of a 1,000 |
| Repeat visit inside twelve months | low end of the band | tank located, lids known |
| Emergency or after hours | band plus a call out fee | crew and truck out of hours |
| Holding tank pump out | $150 to $300 a visit | frequency drives the annual cost |
| Grease trap | quoted by interceptor size | disposal costs more per gallon |
| Excavating a buried lid | quoted on site | labour before pumping starts |
| Fitting a riser to the access | quoted on site | removes digging from every future visit |
The $150 to $300 residential band is the figure to anchor on, since it is the range published across the market for a standard tank. Larger tanks are quoted up from it on volume rather than against a second published band, because the honest position is that the market data thins out fast above 1,000 gallons. Nothing here is a fixed price list, and a sight unseen number for a tank nobody has located is a guess.
What makes one quote higher than another?
Volume, distance and difficulty, in that order. Water weighs 8.34 pounds per gallon, so a full 1,000 gallon tank means moving more than 8,300 pounds of liquid and then paying to dispose of it at a permitted receiving facility.
What actually moves the number:
- Tank size. A 1,500 gallon tank is half again the volume of a 1,000, and the truck fills faster.
- How long since the last service. A tank with a compacted sludge mat takes backflushing, not suction.
- Whether the lids are exposed. A tank under sod or a parking pad adds digging before anything is pumped.
- Hose run. A typical vacuum truck carries 100 to 200 feet of 3 inch hose, and past that the truck has to get closer.
- Drive distance from the yard, which is the same variable that sets delivery on our rental equipment at $50 to $150.
- Time of day. Out of hours is a different price, honestly labelled.
Access is a bigger factor here than most places. Full detail on that is on septic pumping service.

What does a 1,000 gallon septic tank cost to pump?
A 1,000 gallon tank is the standard residential size across the townships around Philadelphia, and pumping one typically costs $150 to $300. That figure assumes the lids are findable, the truck can park within hose reach and the tank has been serviced at some point in the last decade.
For context on capacity, 25 Pa. Code Chapter 73, the Department of Environmental Protection standards for onlot sewage treatment facilities, sets minimum tank capacity by the number of bedrooms in the house, which is why a four bedroom property is far more likely to have 1,250 gallons or more sitting in the yard than a two bedroom one. Check the permit paperwork before assuming it is a 1,000.

Three worked examples
A serviced tank in Abington, 8.6 miles out. 1,000 gallons, risers fitted, driveway to back down, last pumped four years ago. This is the clean version of the job and it sits in the $150 to $300 band with nothing added.
A neglected tank in Doylestown, 26.2 miles out. 1,250 gallons, no risers, lids under six inches of lawn, tank 90 feet behind the house. Expect the top of the $150 to $300 band for the pumping, plus excavation labour quoted on site, and the riser conversation afterwards, because that digging otherwise repeats on every visit forever.
A holding tank on a rowhouse block in South Philadelphia. No septic tank at all, a sealed holding tank pumped on a schedule at $150 to $300 a visit. The cost driver is not the tank, it is how often it fills and whether the truck can reach the block. See holding tank rental.

What should a fair quote include?
A price that covers emptying both compartments, backflushing, rinsing the effluent filter, a look at the baffles and lawful disposal of the septage. That is the job. Anything charged on top should be something that was genuinely unknown when the quote was given, which in practice means excavation.
What should never be a surprise line:
- Disposal or environmental fees, which belong inside the quoted number
- Fuel surcharges on an address we already knew
- A charge for the second compartment, since a half pumped tank is not a pumped tank
- A minimum charge that was not stated up front
Ask two things when you call anyone, us included. How many gallons are you quoting for, and where does the septage go. Onlot systems in this state sit under the Pennsylvania Sewage Facilities Act, Act 537 of 1966, and the contents of your tank have to reach a facility permitted to receive them, so a hauler who cannot answer the second question is one to skip. The full service description sets out what the visit covers.
Does pumping more often cost less overall?
Yes, in the sense that the alternative is expensive. The US EPA recommends inspection every three years and pumping every three to five for a household system, and Penn State Extension puts a 1,000 gallon tank serving four people at roughly every 2.6 years.
Skipping that schedule does not save the pumping cost. It moves the money to the drainfield, which is the part of the system nobody wants to price. A pump out sits in the low hundreds. A field that has been fed solids for years does not. The frequency table and the adjustments are on how often a septic tank needs pumping, and the symptoms to watch for are on septic tank warning signs.
Where the price changes across the region
Distance is the honest variable, and it is the same one that governs everything we deliver. Drive times from Philadelphia:
| Area | Miles | Drive |
|---|---|---|
| Camden, NJ | 7.3 | 17 min |
| Abington | 8.6 | 22 min |
| Lower Merion | 11.4 | 25 min |
| Upper Darby | 11.5 | 27 min |
| Haverford | 11.9 | 27 min |
| Conshohocken | 13.5 | 24 min |
| Cherry Hill, NJ | 13.6 | 26 min |
| Bensalem | 14.8 | 26 min |
| King of Prussia | 17.3 | 31 min |
| Norristown | 18.8 | 32 min |
| Chester | 22.6 | 37 min |
| Doylestown | 26.2 | 48 min |
Note that near is not the same as easy. A tight block in the city takes longer than a driveway in Bucks County twenty miles further out. That is set out on service areas and on the Philadelphia page.
Other site service costs on the same property
Septic work often lands in the middle of a bigger job, and a renovation that needs a tank emptied usually needs other things on the same driveway. Typical market bands for this region, reviewed July 2026.
| Service | Typical range | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Standard porta potty | $125 to $325 | per month, weekly service |
| Delivery on a rental unit | $50 to $150 | one off, first invoice |
| Weekly service visit | $60 to $100 | each extra visit |
| Roll off dumpster | $426 to $778 | per week |
| Storage container | $100 to $250 | per month |
| Temporary fence | $30 to $75 | per day |
Servicing on a rented unit follows ANSI/PSAI Z4.3, the industry standard for non-sewered waste disposal systems, which treats a weekly visit as the baseline under ordinary use, and crew numbers follow OSHA
1926.51(c)(1), one toilet for 20 or fewer workers on a construction site.
Bundling matters more than negotiating on any of these. One truck movement that drops a dumpster and a unit beats two separate runs, and the same logic applies when a pump out can be scheduled alongside a delivery you already need. See construction site services and home renovation rentals.
Questions about septic pumping cost
Is there a call out fee on top?Not on a scheduled visit in our normal ring. Out of hours work carries one and we say so before the truck moves.
Do you charge by the gallon? We quote the job against tank size, since that is what the customer can actually verify from their permit paperwork.
Will you tell me the price before you arrive? We give the band and the conditions attached to it. If the lids turn out to be buried, you hear the number before anyone starts digging.
Is emergency work priced differently?Yes. Emergency septic service explains what changes and why.
Do you price other site services the same way?Yes. Dumpster rental cost and porta potty rental cost both break fees out separately rather than burying them.
