How many porta potties do I need for an event?
Start at one unit per 50 people for four hours, then adjust. The two adjustments that matter are duration and drink. An eight hour event does not need double the units, but it needs about 30 percent more, and alcohol raises usage by roughly 20 percent because people drink and stay.
| Guests | 4 hours | 6 hours | 8 hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 1 | 2 | 2 |
| 100 | 2 | 3 | 3 |
| 250 | 5 | 6 | 7 |
| 500 | 9 | 11 | 12 |
| 1,000 | 18 | 21 | 24 |
| 2,000 | 36 | 42 | 47 |
Then add accessibility on top. The 2010 ADA Standards, at section 213.2 Exception 4, require 5 percent of the single-user units in each cluster, and never fewer than one, to comply with section 603. Five percent is per cluster, not per event, so units split across four corners of a site means four accessible units. The event sizing calculator runs the whole count, and ADA restroom requirements covers the accessible share.
What kind of unit suits which event?
Three tiers, and most Philadelphia events mix them rather than picking one.
- A standard unit is a self-contained cabin with a 60 to 70 gallon holding tank, no running water, roughly 44 by 48 inches on the ground. It is the right answer for volume.
- A deluxe flushable unit adds a foot-pump flush and a small freshwater tank, typically around 15 gallons. Better for guest-facing placement.
- A restroom trailer is a towable unit with flushing china, running water, lighting and climate control. It needs a level pad, a 110 volt 20 amp circuit and a water source.
Sizes go 2 stall, 4 stall and 8 stall. A common Philadelphia setup is one trailer near the hosted area and a bank of standard units at the far end of the site, which costs far less than trailers everywhere and nobody minds.

Event restroom pricing in Philadelphia
Typical market ranges, reviewed July 2026. These are ranges, not quotes, and the biggest single variable in this city is not the unit, it is whether the truck can reach the placement.
| Unit | Event day | Weekend |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $200 to $400 | $125 to $400 |
| Deluxe flushable | $250 to $500 | $250 to $600 |
| ADA accessible | $199 to $400 | $199 to $300 |
| 2 stall trailer | $900 to $1,500 | $900 to $2,000 |
| 4 stall trailer | $1,200 to $2,500 | $1,400 to $3,000 |
Add-ons run separately. Delivery is $50 to $150 per movement, mid-event servicing is $30 to $60 a unit, and attendants, hand sanitizer stands and lighting are priced per event. The full cost breakdown has the whole picture, and trailer pricing goes deeper on the towable units.
Do I need a permit for portable toilets at a Philadelphia event?
Yes, if the event is on public ground, and Philadelphia routes the application in a way that catches people out. Portable toilet permits here come from the City of Philadelphia Department of Public Health, under its infectious waste program, on the application that also covers holding tanks. Not the Streets Department, not a transportation office.
Anyone running an event with portable units on city ground needs to apply. Planners who have run events in other cities go looking for a streets process, find nothing, and lose a fortnight. Build the application into the timeline at the same point as the rest of the event paperwork. The permit requirements page has the route, and the rental checklist lists what to have ready before you call.

Access at Philadelphia event sites
Fairmount Park, Penn's Landing and the big South Philadelphia venues all set up differently, and the placement conversation is different at each.
- Fairmount Park has long stretches where the only firm, level ground is the path, and a unit parked on the path blocks the route it is meant to serve
- Penn's Landing turf goes soft quickly in rain, so mats or a hardstand placement belong in the order
- Lincoln Financial Field, Citizens Bank Park and the Wells Fargo Center sit in a lot-heavy district where the constraint is the load-in window rather than the ground
- A block party or street festival in South Philadelphia or Fishtown is the hardest of the four, because the truck needs the block clear and a single parked car ends the delivery
Tell us the placement before you tell us the headcount. It changes the plan more.

What is included in an event rental?
Delivery, setup, one clean and stocked unit at the start, collection afterwards, and the waste hauled off under the same infectious waste rules the permit sits under. That is the baseline. Paper is stocked at delivery, and hand sanitizer inside the unit is standard on event orders.
What is not automatic: mid-event servicing, an attendant, exterior lighting, a handwashing station and hand sanitizer stands. Any event over about six hours or 500 people should be pricing a mid-event service, because ANSI/PSAI Z4.3 sets the baseline service interval at once per week for roughly 10 users a day, and an event unit can pass that in an afternoon.
Multi-day events
A weekend event is a different order from a one day event, not a longer one. The tank on a standard cabin holds 60 to 70 gallons, and heavy Saturday use fills it, so a Sunday morning service is not optional. Book it up front, because a Sunday call-out costs more than a scheduled visit and takes longer to arrive.
For anything running three days or more, look at monthly rental rates before paying event rates three times over. Related event types have their own pages: festivals, concerts, weddings, races and golf tournaments.
Common questions about event restroom rental
What does porta potty event actually mean?In the rental trade it means one thing: portable toilets brought in for a temporary gathering, then removed. The phrase has picked up unrelated internet slang. If you are booking equipment, this is the page.
How far in advance should I book? Two to four weeks for a normal event. Six to eight weeks for a trailer in May, June, September or October, which are the tight months in this city.
Can you deliver on a Saturday morning?Yes, and for street events it is often the only workable window. Same day work goes through emergency porta potty rental.
Do units get emptied during the event?Only if you book it. On events under four hours it is rarely needed. Over six hours with alcohol, book it.
Do you serve the suburbs?Yes. Cherry Hill is 13.6 miles out and King of Prussia is 17.3. Full list on service areas.
Can I get a sink as well?Yes. A portable sink with a freshwater tank is the usual pairing for anything serving food.
