What is a light tower?
A light tower is a towable trailer carrying a telescoping mast, four floodlights and its own diesel generator, so it lights a site with no connection to any power supply. You tow it in, level it on outriggers, raise the mast, start it and walk away.
Everything about the design is built around one problem: getting usable light 30 feet in the air on ground that has no service. That is why it carries its own engine, its own fuel and its own stabilisers rather than relying on anything at your end.
If the site already has power, or is going to, the cheaper long term answer is fixed lighting off a temporary power pole rather than burning diesel every night.
How much area does one light tower cover?
Enough for most single site positions, and less than the brochure figure suggests once you account for obstructions. A four lamp tower at full mast height is commonly rated to cover in the region of 5 to 7 acres, and that number assumes flat open ground with nothing in the way.
On a real Philadelphia site the honest working figures are smaller:
- A cleared rowhouse lot: one tower does the whole thing comfortably
- A mid block construction site with a standing structure: two, because the building shadows half of it
- A stadium car park set up at Lincoln Financial Field: several, spaced on the perimeter
- A road or utility cut on a city street: one, aimed away from the houses
- A festival back of house at Penn's Landing: one per compound, not one for the site
Shadow is the thing that catches people out. Anything vertical, from a storage container to a stack of panels, throws a black stripe across the ground behind it. Plan positions around what is standing, not around a grid.
The OSHA lighting levels that set the count
OSHA 1926.56(a) and its Table D-3 set the minimum illumination for construction work, and they are the reason a job needs a number of towers rather than a feeling about brightness.

That 30 foot candle figure for offices is why a mobile office trailer gets proper internal lighting rather than a work lamp. And the 3 foot candle line covering access ways matters more than people expect, because the route between the gate, the units and the office is where night injuries happen.
Light the walking routes to the portable toilets and the handwashing stations, not just the work face. It is the cheapest safety decision on any night shift.
Diesel, LED and solar

Metal halide is still the workhorse and it is what most yards run. LED heads pull a fraction of the power for comparable output, which is why a diesel LED tower goes far longer between refuels. Solar hybrids are the answer where noise is the constraint rather than light, which on a Philadelphia rowhouse block it very often is.
Balloon lights are worth knowing about for work near live traffic, because a diffused source throws far less glare at drivers than four aimed floods do.
Fuel, runtime and refuelling
A typical towable diesel unit carries a tank in the region of 30 gallons and will run for most of a working week between fills under normal load. LED units stretch that considerably.
What actually decides your refuel schedule:
- Hours run per night, which is the obvious one
- Lamp type, since LED heads draw far less
- Whether the onboard generator is also feeding tools or a site office
- Temperature, because cold starts and heater loads cost fuel
- Whether anyone remembered to shut it down at dawn
Agree who fuels it before delivery. On short hires we handle it. On long term site placements most contractors fuel their own, because they already have a tank on site for the plant.
Noise, neighbours and night work in Philadelphia
This is the section that matters most in this city. A diesel light tower running all night sits at the level of a small generator, and on a rowhouse block the nearest bedroom window is often 20 feet from where the truck can park it.
Philadelphia Code Title 10, Chapter 10-400 covers noise and excessive vibration, and a light tower idling outside a row of houses at 2am is precisely the complaint that chapter exists for. Check the permitted hours for your work before you plan a night pour, not after the first phone call.
Practical mitigations that work:
- Solar hybrid or LED units, which run quieter or silent
- Position the tower away from housing and aim the heads back toward the work
- Shut down when the crew stops, rather than leaving it lit until morning
- On state routes, night work is set up under PennDOT Publication 213, the temporary traffic control guidelines, which governs how the closure and its lighting are arranged
Aim matters as much as position. A head tilted 10 degrees too high lights bedrooms instead of the ground.
Setting up: outriggers, wind and where the mast goes
The mast is a 30 foot lever with four fixtures on the end of it, so the outriggers go out and get pinned before the mast goes up. Every time, on every surface, including flat asphalt.
Where the tower goes:
- On firm level ground, with the outriggers on plates if it is soft
- Clear of overhead wires by a wide margin, since the mast goes up 30 feet
- Outside the gate swing and outside the delivery approach
- Not against a temporary fence line, which needs to stay reconfigurable
- Somewhere the fuel truck or a can carrier can reach
Bring the mast down in high wind and before the site closes for a storm. That instruction is on every unit and it is ignored until the first time it is not.
What does a light tower cost to rent?
We quote per job. There is no published market band for light towers in this region that we would stand behind, and putting an invented number on this page would be worse than telling you plainly that we quote it.
What drives the figure is unit type, term, delivery distance, whether we fuel it, and how many you need to meet the OSHA foot candle levels above. Questions about light tower rental
Can it power tools as well?Most towable units have an onboard generator with auxiliary outlets. It is not a substitute for a proper site supply, and temporary wiring still falls under Article 590 of the National Electrical Code.
How is it delivered?Towed. It needs a route in and somewhere to turn, which on a rowhouse block is the usual constraint, exactly as it is for a 20ft container or a roll off dumpster.

Do I need a permit?Not for the tower itself on private ground. Occupying the street is a separate approval.
