Do I need a porta potty for a home renovation?
If a contractor is working on the house, yes, and it is their legal obligation rather than a courtesy. OSHA 1926.51(c)(1) requires one toilet on a construction site for 20 or fewer workers, and a gut renovation is a construction site whether or not anyone calls it one.
The homeowner reason is different and simpler. A renovation with the only bathroom torn out means either the crew uses your remaining one all day, or they do not, and the second option is worth $125 to $325 a month. Trades walking through a finished front room in work boots six times a day is how carpets get ruined and neighbours get annoyed.
Where does it go on a rowhouse?
This is the whole Philadelphia question, and the answer is usually one of four places.
- The rear yard, reached through the house or a rear alley, which is the best option when it exists
- The side return on a twin or a corner property, if it is at least 4 feet clear
- The front footway, which needs a permit and is the option of last resort
- Inside the site fence on a full gut where the front is already hoarded
A standard cabin measures roughly 44 by 48 inches on the common manufacturer models and stands about 90 inches tall, which means it will pass through most rear gates and down most side returns. Do I need a permit for a porta potty at my house?
Not on your own property. A unit in your rear yard, your side return or your driveway needs no city permit anywhere in this region.
On the footway or in the parking lane, yes, and Philadelphia routes it unusually. Portable toilet permits come from the City of Philadelphia Department of Public Health under its infectious waste program, on the application that also covers holding tanks, rather than from a streets or transportation department. What will the neighbours think?
The honest answer is that they will notice it, and that a well-serviced unit stops being interesting inside a week. The three things that actually cause complaints are smell, placement and the truck.
Smell is a servicing question. ANSI/PSAI Z4.3 sets the baseline at one service per week for a unit taking about 10 users a day, and a renovation crew of four sits comfortably inside that. A unit that smells on a rowhouse block is a unit that has been missed, not a unit that is inherently unpleasant. Placement is about sight lines and doors. Face the door away from the neighbour's kitchen window, not toward it. And warn the block about the truck day, because a service truck on a narrow street for ten minutes is fine if people know and infuriating if they do not.
How long will I need it?
Longer than the renovation schedule says, in almost every case. Book by the month and extend rather than booking four weeks and scrambling.

On anything over about three months, ask about the storage container and temporary fence at the same time. One delivery for three items beats three deliveries, which matters more on a narrow block than on an open site.
Winter renovations
Philadelphia gets cold enough to freeze a tank and mild enough that nobody plans for it. A unit sitting in the permanent shade of a party wall through January will freeze before one in the open. Is there a minimum rental?Weekly is the shortest we price sensibly. A single day costs nearly as much as a week once the two truck movements are counted, so we will tell you to take the week.
What if the crew is only there two days a week?Take it monthly anyway. Rental time is calendar time, not working time, and the monthly rate assumes that.
Can it go in a shared alley?Only with the agreement of whoever else uses it, and only if it leaves a clear route. A blocked rear alley is the fastest way to a genuine complaint.
