Everything else is detail on top of that: a vent stack that manages air, a chemical charge that manages bacteria, and a service schedule that resets both.
What are the parts of a porta potty?
Six components, and each one has a job:
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| Holding tank | Sealed base reservoir, 60 to 70 gallons on standard units |
| Seat and riser | Sits directly over the tank opening, no trap or valve |
| Vent stack | Pipe from tank to roof that draws tank air out |
| Deodorizer charge | Dye, fragrance and biocide dosed into the tank with fresh water |
| Door with inside latch | Occupied indicator, and the privacy OSHA 1926.51(c)(3) requires |
| Roof panel | Translucent, so the cabin is usable without power |
A standard unit measures roughly 44 by 48 inches at the base and about 90 inches tall, and it weighs in the range of 150 to 200 pounds empty. That footprint is why a single unit fits on a Philadelphia rowhouse footway and a restroom trailer does not.
How does the waste actually get handled?
Gravity into the tank, then vacuum out of it. Nothing is treated inside the unit and nothing breaks down to nothing. The chemical charge slows the bacteria producing odour, and that is the limit of what happens on site.
The service side works like this:
- A vacuum truck parks within hose reach, generally 25 to 50 feet depending on the truck
- The pump draws the tank contents into the truck's tank, which typically holds several hundred to over a
thousand gallons across a route
- Fresh water and a measured deodorizer charge go back into the empty tank
- The interior is washed and restocked, which ANSI/PSAI Z4.3 treats as part of normal service
- The load goes to a permitted treatment facility, never to a storm drain or a site
In Philadelphia this waste stream sits under the Department of Public Health's infectious waste program, which is also the office issuing the portable toilet and holding tank application for units on public ground. Contractors arriving from other states expect a streets department and are usually surprised. See permit requirements and how often units get serviced.

How does the vent stack keep the air clear?
Wind passing over the top of the stack pulls air out of the tank, and that creates a slight draw down through the seat opening so tank air does not rise into the cabin. It is passive. No fan, no power.
Which means placement decides whether it works. A unit wedged into a corner between two rowhouse walls, or tight against a hoarding, sits in dead air and the stack does nothing. Give the unit open air on at least two sides and leave the roof panel alone. The placement guide has the clearances, and do porta potties smell covers what happens when the stack is blocked by a wasp nest, which is a genuinely common July problem here.

How do flushable porta potties work?
A deluxe flushable unit uses a foot pump to draw water from a separate freshwater reservoir and rinse the bowl after each use. The bowl holds a small amount of clean water between uses, so the tank contents are not in the line of sight, and the waste still drops into the same style of sealed holding tank underneath.
That second reservoir is the whole difference. It means a fixed number of flushes per charge, so a flushable unit at a busy event needs servicing on usage rather than on a calendar. For a wedding or a corporate event the next step up is a towable trailer with flushing china, running water and climate control. Compare deluxe flushable units, 2 stall trailers, 4 stall trailers and what a trailer costs.

How does a portable sink work?
A portable handwashing station is a self contained sink with a foot pump, a freshwater tank and a separate grey water tank underneath the basin. Step on the pump, water comes up through the tap, and the used water drains to the waste side rather than onto the ground.
Manufacturer specs on a common two station unit put the freshwater tank in the region of 22 gallons, which covers a large number of short washes before it needs a refill. OSHA 1926.51(f)(1) requires washing facilities where employees apply paints, coatings, herbicides or insecticides, or work in other operations where contaminants may be harmful, and a sanitizer stand does not satisfy that because sanitizer does not remove contaminants. See portable sink rental, handwashing stations, sanitizer stands and handwashing requirements.
How do camping porta potties work?
A camping toilet is a small two piece cassette unit, usually around 5 gallons of flush water over a 5 gallon waste tank, emptied by hand at a dump station. It is a different product from a rental unit and it is sized for two or three people rather than a crowd.
The rental version for a campground, a farm or a remote site is a standard unit with a service route built around it, since there is nothing to empty by hand. Look at camping porta potty and farm and agricultural restrooms for how those jobs get covered.
What chemicals go in, and are they the same as septic chemicals?
No, and the confusion costs people money. Portable toilet deodorizer is dosed for a 60 to 70 gallon tank emptied weekly, and its job is to suppress odour between visits. Septic tank additives are sold for a system holding a thousand gallons or more that is pumped every few years.
Never put a septic additive into a portable unit and never treat a portable charge as a septic treatment. If you have a real septic system on a property in the outer ring, the answer is pumping on a schedule rather than a bottle. See septic pumping service, how often a tank needs pumping and warning signs. Large volume temporary needs use a holding tank instead.
What does a Philadelphia jobsite delivery look like?
The truck arrives, the driver checks the spot is level and reachable, the unit comes off the tailgate on a lift or a hand truck, and it is stocked and left with a service date. Ten minutes on an easy site.
Philadelphia adds one recurring complication. On a 26 foot cartway with cars parked both sides, the driver needs a clear approach and a spot to set the unit down that is not somebody's parked car. Flag a space the night before and the delivery is uneventful. That single habit prevents most of the failed drops we see on rowhouse blocks, and it matters just as much for the dumpster if one is going out front the same week.

How does portable sink work without plumbing?
A foot pump lifts fresh water up from a tank and drains it into a second tank below.
What is in the blue liquid?
Dye, fragrance and a biocide. Portable toilet chemicals near me searches turn up the same formulations.
